PHOENIX (June 17, 2017) — Phoenix Rising FC (5-5-0) heads back on the road this Sunday, June 18, as they head to the Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City to take on Swope Park Rangers (5-4-1).

With about one-third of the USL season gone, Rising FC sit just a spot outside of a playoff position in the standings, tied with Tulsa Roughnecks FC in points, but trailing them in the first tie breaker (goals scored).

Forward Didier Drogba made a stellar club debut last Saturday, scoring a goal and notching an assist to lead Phoenix Rising FC to a 2-1 victory over Whitecaps FC 2. The night also marked the first game for new head coach Patrice Carteron, as well as the debut for defender Amadou Dia, who earned USL Team of the Week honors for his performance against Whitecaps FC 2.

Phoenix Rising FC will be looking to repeat their previous result against Swope Park, a 4-3 home win back on April 23. That night, Rising FC jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to goals from Alessandro Riggi, Luke Rooney, Chris Cortez, and Peter Ramage. However, a 78th minute Kody Wakasa red card allowed Swope Park back into the game. Kevin Oliveira scored twice and Christian Duke tacked on a stoppage-time goal of his own to bring the Rangers within one, but the visitors couldn’t find an equalizer before the final whistle.

More recently, Swope Park have relied on a stout defense to reach 7th place in the Western Conference standings. The Rangers haven’t conceded more than one goal in a game since April 29, a stretch of five matches.

Offensively, Swope Park are led by forward Kharlton Belmar who has scored a team-high four goals in 10 league appearances. Duke leads the team in chances created with 12. In net, Swope Park have used the goalkeeper trio of Adrian Zendejas, Andrew Dykstra, and David Grezcek, with each having collected one clean sheet this year.

Sunday’s trip will be Phoenix Rising FC’s first away meeting with Swope Park in its club history. Overall, the two teams have faced one another twice, including Phoenix’s win earlier this year and a 1-1 draw back in July 2016.

Defender Uchenna Uzo, midfielder Blair Gavin, and goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski all made their first league start of the year on Tuesday, while defenders Eder Arreola and JJ Greer each scored their first goal for the club in the loss.

Meanwhile, Whitecaps 2 enter Saturday’s game on a high note, having won two of their last three matches, including a 1-0 victory over rival Portland Timbers 2 in their most recent match last Saturday. A 56th-minute goal from midfielder Marco Bustos was enough to earn Rich Fagan’s squad three points in the first of three straight road matches.

While Whitecaps FC 2 doesn’t score much — they have scored just 13 goals in 11 games — the club is 6th in the league with four clean sheets so far this season.

Last year, the teams split their two meetings in the USL, with each winning at home. Phoenix earned a dramatic 3-2 win on August 3, 2016, coming back from a 2-0 second-half deficit thanks to two Luke Rooney goals, before Chris Cortez fired home the winner in stoppage time.

San Francisco is in its inaugural season in the North American Soccer League (NASL). The Deltas defeated PDL side Burlingame Dragons in the previous round of the U.S. Open Cup, 2-1, to reach Wednesday’s game. The win in Fresno gave the club their second win in five days, following their 2-1 league triumph over Oklahoma City Energy FC last Saturday. Jason Johnson and Shawn Wright-Phillips scored for Phoenix Rising FC in that win, with Wright-Phillips’ goal coming in stoppage time to give the team a dramatic late win.

Dampening the excitement of Saturday’s win, however, were injuries to midfielders Luke Rooney and Alessandro Riggi. Rooney, who scored twice against San Antonio FC last year, tore his right ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. Riggi also suffered a right knee injury, but will only by sidelined for the next three to five weeks.

Meanwhile, San Antonio FC is the last unbeaten team in USL, and are led in attack by forward Billy Forbes, who’s six goals are tied for most in the league. Fellow attacker César Elizondo is second on the team with four goals.

Last week, San Antonio FC was held scoreless for the first time this year, as Seattle Sounders FC 2 snapped the team’s five-match winning streak with a 0-0 draw. Like Phoenix Rising FC, San Antonio won their U.S. Open Cup match on Wednesday, knocking out Houston Dutch Lions 2-1 in Conroe, Texas.

The two clubs have met just three times before, during San Antonio FC’s inaugural season last year. The sides split the three-match series, with Phoenix Rising FC winning its lone home match, 1-0. PHOENIX (May 5, 2017) – Phoenix Rising FC (2-2-0) returns home following an off-week friendly in Tucson with a United Soccer League (USL) matchup against Reno 1868 FC (0-3-2) this Saturday, May 6. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m.

Tickets for the match are still available and can be purchased at www.www.phxrisingfc.com. Fans can also watch the match live locally on YurView Arizona Cox Channels 7 & 1007 (HD) or online at www.www.phxrisingfc.com.

Phoenix Rising FC comes out of the month of April having secured six out of a possible 12 points in the season’s first four matches. The club is currently on a two-match winning streak following wins over LA Galaxy II and Swope Park Rangers. The attack has largely been spearheaded by midfielder Luke Rooney, who finished April with three goals and one assist while also being named to the USL Team of the Week twice. Forward Omar Bravo also had a good month, securing a team-leading two assists and forcing a foul in the box that led to the club’s first goal at its new home.

Fans of the club also had a good month. The team’s attendance record was broken twice in April, most recently on April 23 when 7,162 fans watched Phoenix Rising FC beat Swope Park Rangers, 4-3. All three of Phoenix Rising FC’s home matches this season have been sellouts.

On the other side of the pitch will be expansion side Reno 1868 FC. The team sits at the bottom of the Western Conference with just two points in five matches. But Reno came close to its first win of the year in its last match on April 22 against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. They held a 2-1 lead for most of the second half, but settled for a draw when the Switchbacks equalized in stoppage time.
