PHOENIX (May 30, 2017) — Phoenix Rising FC looks to match its deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, May 31, when they face the San Francisco Deltas at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex at 7:30 p.m. If the club wins, it will travel to San Jose to kick off against Major League Soccer (MLS) side San Jose Earthquakes.

In what will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, Rising FC could match its deepest run in the U.S. Open Cup. A win in Wednesday’s third round match sends the club to the fourth round for only the second time in its history.

Phoenix Rising reached the third round by defeating Premier Development League (PDL) side Fresno Fuego, 3-1, on May 17 in Fresno, California. Rising FC players Kody Wakasa, Eric Avila, and Mike Seth scored goals in the victory.

In the club's most recent game, Phoenix Rising FC claimed its first away victory in league play, coming from behind to knock off Los Angeles Galaxy II, 2-1, in Carson, California on May 27. Avila scored his first league goal for the club, while Jason Johnson registered his second goal of the season in the win.

San Francisco is in its inaugural season in the North American Soccer League (NASL). The Deltas defeated PDL side Burlingame Dragons in the previous round of the U.S. Open Cup, 2-1, to reach Wednesday’s game. Defender Reiner Ferreira and forward Tom Heinemann scored second-half goals for the Deltas that night.

In the NASL, San Francisco has cooled off after a hot start; the team began the year 1-0-3 in league play, but are winless and goalless in each of their last two games, a 3-0 loss away to Jacksonville Armada and a 0-0 draw with the New York Cosmos at home.

There is no prior history between the teams, with Wednesday’s fixture being their first all-time meeting. It will also be the first time Rising FC will face a team based in the Bay Area.

The loss was Phoenix’s first since May 6th, snapping a two-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Meanwhile, LA Galaxy II enter this week’s game on a two-match unbeaten streak of their own; after a 2-1 win in New Jersey over New York Red Bulls II on May 14th, Galaxy II used a 72nd minute goal from forward Justin Dhillon to secure a 1-1 road draw against Rio Grande Valley FC last Saturday.

Los Dos are led offensively by Dhillon, Ethan Zubak, and Adonis Amaya, with all three forwards accounting for two goals apiece in 2017. Amaya scored LA’s lone goal in their loss to Phoenix Rising FC back in April.

While Phoenix Rising FC hasn’t played a USL road game since April 8, a 2-0 loss to Real Monarchs SLC, the team recently won in Fresno, California against Premier Development League (PDL) side Fresno Fuego on Wednesday in the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

The win in Fresno gave the club their second win in five days, following their 2-1 league triumph over Oklahoma City Energy FC last Saturday. Jason Johnson and Shawn Wright-Phillips scored for Phoenix Rising FC in that win, with Wright-Phillips’ goal coming in stoppage time to give the team a dramatic late win.

Dampening the excitement of Saturday’s win, however, were injuries to midfielders Luke Rooney and Alessandro Riggi. Rooney, who scored twice against San Antonio FC last year, tore his right ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. Riggi also suffered a right knee injury, but will only by sidelined for the next three to five weeks.

Meanwhile, San Antonio FC is the last unbeaten team in USL, and are led in attack by forward Billy Forbes, who’s six goals are tied for most in the league. Fellow attacker César Elizondo is second on the team with four goals.

Last week, San Antonio FC was held scoreless for the first time this year, as Seattle Sounders FC 2 snapped the team’s five-match winning streak with a 0-0 draw. Like Phoenix Rising FC, San Antonio won their U.S. Open Cup match on Wednesday, knocking out Houston Dutch Lions 2-1 in Conroe, Texas.

The two clubs have met just three times before, during San Antonio FC’s inaugural season last year. The sides split the three-match series, with Phoenix Rising FC winning its lone home match, 1-0. Rooney’s brace in the team’s first trip to San Antonio wasn’t enough in a 3-2 loss later that season, and the final match of the series in San Antonio ended in a 1-1 draw.

The club kicks off its U.S. Open Cup campaign against Premier Development League (PDL) side Fresno Fuego. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. and be streamed live online.

This is the fourth season Phoenix Rising FC has participated in the U.S. Open Cup. In its previous three appearances as Arizona United SC, the club has gone 3-3-0 in Open Cup play. Its deepest run came in 2014 when the club reached the fourth round of the tournament before losing to Major League Soccer (MLS) side LA Galaxy. Last season the club defeated PDL side FC Tucson, 5-0, in the second round before falling to USL side Colorado Spring Switchbacks FC, 3-0, in round three.

 
Feugo comes into the match in good form. In addition to their 4-1 thrashing of La Maquina FC in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup, Fresno is 2-0-0 in PDL play, outscoring their opponents 7-0. The club is led offensively by former Arizona United SC midfielder Jose ‘Chiva’ Cuevas, who scored a brace in the club’s first U.S Open Cup match.

The Fuego have made three previous appearances in the U.S. Open Cup, going as far as the fourth round in 2003. In six matches, the club is 3-3-0 in the tournament.

PHOENIX (May 5, 2017) – Phoenix Rising FC (2-2-0) returns home following an off-week friendly in Tucson with a United Soccer League (USL) matchup against Reno 1868 FC (0-3-2) this Saturday, May 6. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m.

Phoenix Rising FC comes out of the month of April having secured six out of a possible 12 points in the season’s first four matches. The club is currently on a two-match winning streak following wins over LA Galaxy II and Swope Park Rangers. The attack has largely been spearheaded by midfielder Luke Rooney, who finished April with three goals and one assist while also being named to the USL Team of the Week twice. Forward Omar Bravo also had a good month, securing a team-leading two assists and forcing a foul in the box that led to the club’s first goal at its new home.

Fans of the club also had a good month. The team’s attendance record was broken twice in April, most recently on April 23 when 7,162 fans watched Phoenix Rising FC beat Swope Park Rangers, 4-3. All three of Phoenix Rising FC’s home matches this season have been sellouts.

On the other side of the pitch will be expansion side Reno 1868 FC. The team sits at the bottom of the Western Conference with just two points in five matches. But Reno came close to its first win of the year in its last match on April 22 against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. PHOENIX (April 29, 2017) – Phoenix Rising FC has a week off from United Soccer League (USL) play, but the club isn’t taking a break from the pitch. Tonight, the club travels to Tucson to square off against Premier Development League (PDL) side FC Tucson and the University of Arizona Men’s Soccer team.

It’ll be a homecoming for interim head coach Rick Schantz. Prior to coming to Phoenix Rising, Schantz was the head coach for FC Tucson, reaching the Western Conference finals in his final three seasons. He also helped the club reach the third round of the U.S. Open Cup in 2013. During that run, FC Tucson beat two professional sides (Phoenix FC and San Antonio Scorpions FC) before being eliminated by the Houston Dynamo in Texas.

According to Schantz, the friendly will be two 45-minute halves, but the team will treat it like three-30-minute periods. Schantz will start the match with regulars before subbing in the rest of the roster en masse throughout the match.

Phoenix Rising FC comes off its first win of 2017, a 2-1 thriller over LA Galaxy II. In that match, the club overcame a 1-0 second-half deficit thanks to two goals from midfielder Luke Rooney. Overlooked in the excitement of the win was the goaltending of Josh Cohen. In a tightly contested match, Cohen stopped four shots that came from inside the 6-yard box to conserve the win.

Swope Park Rangers are one of just three teams in USL to not lose a match yet in 2017 (three games minimum) and it’s largely thanks to their stingy defense. After giving up a goal in the 24th minute of their season opener, the Rangers haven’t allowed a goal in 246 consecutive minutes. That streak includes back-to-back shutout wins, the latest a 1-0 victory over Sacramento Republic FC. This will be the club’s first road trip of 2017.

The two clubs have only met one other time in regular season play. Last season, they battled to a 1-1 draw on July 9, 2016, in Arizona.

Both teams are coming off shutout road losses last week. Phoenix Rising dropped its match to Real Monarchs SLC, 2-0. Los Dos fell to San Antonio FC, 3-0.

A bright spot for Phoenix Rising was goalkeeper Josh Cohen. Against the Monarchs, Cohen made several big saves to prevent the match from getting out of hand. His 43rd-minute diving stop to deny Sebastian Velasquez was considered one of the saves of the week by the United Soccer League.

Los Angeles dominated possession against San Antonio FC last week, holding onto the ball 60.7% of the time to San Antonio’s 39.3% per Opta stats. But none of the possession led to anything dangerous, as the team created just one chance and got one shot on target the entire match.

The all-time series between the club belongs to Los Dos, who are 5-3-2 and have won the last three meetings between the two clubs. Phoenix Rising FC’s last win against LA came on August 29, 2015 in a 2-1 win.

Additionally, statistical analysis will be powered by Opta – the world’s leading provider of live, detailed sports data – who will manage and deliver in-depth details for all USL games.

PHOENIX, AZ (March 31, 2017) – Phoenix Rising Football Club (0-1-0) heads on its first road trip of the season to Utah to square off with Real Monarchs SLC (1-0-0) on Saturday, April 8, at 3 p.m.

Fans can watch the match live locally on YurView Arizona Cox Channels 7 & 1007 (HD) or online at www.phxrisingfc.com. Fans can also head to the club’s official watch party at the Thirsty Lion Gastropub & Grill in Tempe Marketplace (2000 East Rio Salado Parkway #1041, Tempe, AZ 85281)

The road trip comes on the heels of Phoenix Rising FC’s historic home opener on March 25. An all-time club record 6,890 fans watched as Phoenix Rising FC fell to Toronto FC II, 1-0. The match marked the opening of the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex, the first soccer-specific stadium in the club’s four-year history.

Real Monarchs SLC are coming off a road win to begin their 2017 campaign. Behind goals from midfielders James Moberg and Nick Besler, the Monarchs downed Portland Timbers 2, 2-1. Midfielder Charlie Adams notched the assist for both goals.

This will be the eighth meetup between the two clubs. In two previous seasons, Phoenix Rising FC is 4-3-0. The teams aren’t just evenly matched in terms of records. The matches themselves have been very close with six of the seven matches decided by one goal. The only time a contest was decided by more than a goal came on July 22, 2016, a 3-0 win for Phoenix Rising FC.
