PHOENIX (November 7, 2018) – Phoenix Rising FC travels to Louisville, Kentucky, in search of its first-ever USL Cup when it squares off with defending USL champion Louisville City FC in the USL Cup Final. The match kicks off at 6 p.m. on Thursday and will be televised nationally on ESPN 2 in addition to being broadcast nationally on SiriusXM Radio via the SiriusXMFC channel.
Phoenix Rising's road to the USL Cup final began with a 3-0 win over Portland Timber 2 in the first round of the USL Playoffs. The next week, Rising FC defeated Swope Park and avenged their 2017 playoff loss to the club in a 4-2 win. In the Western Conference Final, Phoenix went on the road for the first time in the 2018 playoffs and secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Western Conference regular-season champion Orange County Soccer Club.
Captain Didier Drogba has scored a goal in each of the club's three playoff matches and has a streak of four goals in four playoff matches going back to last season.
Louisville City's road to the USL Cup final began with a 4-1 win over Indy Eleven in the first round. They then shutout Bethlehem Steel, 2-0, in the Eastern Conference Semi-finals. In the Eastern Conference Final, Louisville City won 5-1 over New York Red Bulls II. This will be the second consecutive USL Cup Final for the club, having won the title last season over Swope Park Rangers in Louisville.
Both teams will be playing with less than a week of rest, but that hasn't been a concern for Phoenix Rising. The club has compiled a 6-1-0 record (outscoring opponents 18-6) with five clean sheets in midweek matches.
Midfielder Solomon Asante picked up another honor earlier this week. On Monday, Asante was named to the USL All-League First Team for his performance this season. He’s the second player in club history to receive the honor.
Thursday’s match will be the first time Phoenix and Louisville City face each other and it will be the first time Phoenix Rising has ever played east of the Mississippi River. Fans are invited to the official watch party Thursday evening at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex.
Two large projection screens will be on the pitch, and fans are welcomed to sit on the field with blankets, or in the west stands to watch Phoenix Rising FC square off with Louisville City FC. Snacks, pizza, and non-alcoholic drinks will be served, in addition to beer at happy hour prices. Admission is free.
