Phoenix Rising FC has signed Jose Andres Hernandez, pending league and federation approval, the club announced today.
Born in Ixtapan de la Sal, Mexico, the midfielder attended Maryvale High School in Phoenix.
“I am very happy to be working with Jose once again,” said Rising Head Coach Juan Guerra. “Not many players in our league read the game the way he does. He is a technically clean and a dynamic player that suits our style of play very well.”
A veteran of 128 USL Championship matches, Hernandez began his career as a Homegrown signing for Real Salt Lake from the former RSL-Arizona Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona. He played nine matches from 2013 to 2015 before appearing seven times and scoring one goal for the Real Salt Lake’s MLS side during the 2017 season. Hernandez has continued to ply his trade in the USL Championship since, playing 28 more matches with RSL Monarchs (2017-18), 31 with LA Galaxy II (2019), 15 for OKC Energy FC (2020) and 55 for Oakland Roots (2021-22). He has eight goals, 10 assists and 102 chances created in the USL Championship since 2019.
“I’m a very attacking-orientated player but I’ll give my all game in and game out,” said Hernandez. “I’m not afraid of doing the dirty work or getting gritty. My footy, at the end of the day, will speak for itself. I want the ball. I like to connect passes and not turn the ball over – being classy with it and being exciting to watch.”
The 26-year-old played collegiately at UCLA for two seasons, earning 2015 Pac 12 Freshman of the Year and 2016 Pac 12 Co-Player of the Year honors. Hernandez was named USSDA Western Conference U-18 Player of the Year in 2014-15.
