LAS VEGAS, Nevada (Saturday, August 7) – Phoenix Rising FC’s (11-2-3) Aodhan Quinn and Santi Moar scored tonight as the club extended its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 2-2 draw against Lights FC at Cashman Field.
The goal was the fourth of the season for Quinn while Moar tied Solomon Asante for the team lead with his eighth. Rising returns to Wild Horse Pass next Saturday, August 14 vs. Orange County SC.
Tonight, Lights FC took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Roberto Molina accepted a pass from Antonie Leone in the corner of the pitch. Vegas’ No. 11 skipped through a pair of Phoenix defenders on the dribble before teeing up a hard shot from close range. Molina’s shot eluded the outstretched arms of Rising goalkeeper Ben Lundt, who dove to his left side, but was unable to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
Rising responded in the 26th minute when David Egbo chipped a header over Vegas’ back line. Moar caught up to the pass on the opposite side the defense and tried to beat goalkeeper Alex Rando with a low, left-footed shot to the back post but the attempt skipped just wide of the far post.
Two-minutes later, Moar broke through again. As Rando closed Moar down, the forward pushed the ball around the goalkeeper with a move to the outside with his left foot. In alone on goal, Moar had his feet clipped out from underneath him by Rando, in a last-ditch effort to stop the attack. Referee Melvin Rivas instantly pointed to the spot, awarding Phoenix a penalty kick. The spot kick was converted by Moar, who sent Rando the wrong direction before depositing a low shot in the corner to the goalkeeper’s right side, evening the score, 1-1.
Moar and Egbo combined to set the table for Solomon Asante in the 40th minute. Asante struck the centering pass well with his first touch, but Rando came across his line to get a piece of the shot. The ball rebounded behind the goalkeeper and Asante nearly put away the second chance but a Lights FC defender intervened, sending the ball out for a corner kick.
Quinn made it three games in a row with a goal in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. Following a lengthy break for injury and a caution to Vegas’ Frank Daroma, Quinn cracked a low and hard serve into the area. Egbo caught up to the pass at the top of the six-yard box, but let it run on, mixing up Rando just enough to send the ball into the back of the net, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead at the half.
Vegas’ Bruce El Mesmari came free in a very dangerous position in the 65th minute. Accepting a pass at the top of the area, Mesmari had time to stare down Lundt. The forward tried to beat the goalkeeper low to his right side, but Lundt made a diving save and smothered the rebound to preserve the one-goal lead.
Vegas tied the match, 2-2, in the 84th minute when a cross was chipped to the opposite side of the area by Molina. All of Phoenix’s defenders were tied to a man, but the ball cleared them all and sat up perfectly for late-arriving Mohamed Traore. The left back hit the ball perfectly on the volley to send a rocket into the back of the net.

General thoughts on the match…
It’s frustrating. We did enough to win. We should have been a little better with some of our chances in the first half. At 2-1 on the road, if you let a team hang around… We were dropping too deep. The guys were really tired there at the end. [Vegas] didn’t have a midweek game and they had a lot of energy. We got a point on the road in a difficult environment. We’ll take it. But we have a very good team. To be winning, 2-1, late in the game. We shouldn’t be giving up goals like that.
