PHOENIX (October 6, 2017) – Postseason-bound Phoenix Rising FC draws one step closer to the end of the 2017 regular season on Saturday, when the club hosts Rio Grande Valley FC Toros as it continues to jockey for playoff positioning.
Tickets for the match are still available and can be purchased at www.www.phxrisingfc.com. Fans can also watch the match live locally on YurView Arizona Cox Channels 4 & 1004 (Phoenix) or 7 & 1007 (Tucson) or online at www.www.phxrisingfc.com.
Phoenix Rising enters its second-to-last match of the regular season still battling for a spot in the USL Western Conference’s Top 4. Rising FC currently sit three points behind a trio of teams for a top four place and guaranteed first-round home playoff game.
Phoenix Rising got back to winning ways its last time out, coming from behind to knock off Tulsa Roughnecks FC 4-3. The club was trailing 2-0 within the opening 12 minutes, but dug out of the early hole thanks to braces from top scorers Didier Drogba and Jason Johnson last Wednesday.
The win also guaranteed that the club would finish no lower than fifth place in the standings. The team’s previous best-ever finish in the standings came in 2014 when it ended the season in ninth place.
Saturday’s opponents, Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, have already been eliminated from playoff contention, sitting eight points adrift from the top eight with just two matches remaining. 2017 has been a steep drop off for the South Texas club after it finished second in the Western Conference last year.
The Toros drew their last game, a 2-2 result with Swope Park Rangers, snapping a two-game winning streak. The team has gone 2-2-1 over its last five matches overall.
Rio Grande Valley is led by Kyle Murphy offensively. Murphy has a team-high seven goals this season. Justin Bilyeu is the Toros leader in assists with eight.
Phoenix Rising and Rio Grande Valley have met just once this season, a 1-1 draw at the Toros’ H-E-B Park back on August 12, when Rio Grande Valley scored a late equalizer against a 10-man Rising FC squad.
Both all-time matches between the two clubs have ended in 1-1 draws. Saturday will be the first time Rio Grande Valley will visit Phoenix Rising ever.
