PHOENIX (September 15) – Phoenix Rising FC return home on Saturday night, looking to improve its playoff positioning when the club host Real Monarchs SLC at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex at 7:30 p.m. The first 2,000 fans who come to the match will receive a $10 VIP gift card to enjoy the Kona Grill Experience.
Tickets for the match are still available and can be purchased at www.www.phxrisingfc.com. Fans can also watch the match live locally on YurView Arizona Cox Channels 4 & 1004 (Phoenix) or 7 & 1007 (Tucson) or online at www.www.phxrisingfc.com.
Phoenix Rising is in the midst of a franchise-best run, going unbeaten in its last seven matches and picking up points in 13 of its last 15 games overall. In that span, the team has risen from 11th place in the Western Conference to seventh, three points clear of ninth-place OKC Energy FC.
The club also returns forward Didier Drogba from a groin injury. He will be available for selection for Saturday's match.
Last week, Rising FC needed late heroics from A.J. Gray to capture the three points. After an Amadou Dia goal put the club ahead of Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, a goal from Switchbacks forward A.J. Ajeakwa in the 83rd minute leveled the score at 1-1. But Gray scored three minutes later, putting Phoenix Rising back in front, and helping the team capture its first road win in over a month.
This week’s home date with Real Monarchs will be the club’s last home game until October 4. After Saturday’s game, Rising FC embarks on a four-game road trip through the Pacific Northwest.
But Real Monarchs will be no easy task. The club leads the entire USL in points (56), and has built a seven-point lead at the top of the Western Conference. Their recent form has dipped though; the Monarchs lost two weeks ago to San Antonio, before failing to score in a 0-0 draw against bottom-of-the-table Portland Timbers 2 last Saturday.
Forward Chandler Hoffman has been Real Monarchs’ most potent attacker in 2017; his 14 goals lead the team, and are the fourth-most scored by anyone in USL. Hoffman and midfielder Charlie Adams share the team leads in assists, with 7 each. Only Reno 1868 FC have scored more goals as a club than Real Monarchs this season.
The Monarchs have also been tough defensively. The club’s eight clean sheets as a team rank in the top 10 in USL. But six of those clean sheets came from Connor SParrow, who was recently signed to a first-team contract by Real Salt Lake.
This week’s meeting between Phoenix Rising and Real Monarchs will be the 10th ever fixture played between the two outfits. Their last meeting was a 1-1 draw earlier this year. The all-time series is split at 4-4-1 for each club.
