(June 29, 2019) — Phoenix Rising seemed destined for a draw in the waning moments of its match with the No. 2 team in the Western Conference, Portland Timbers 2. But defender Amadou Dia scored his second goal more than four minutes into stoppage time while Solomon Asante added an insurance penalty to give Rising FC a 4-2 win. It’s the club’s eighth straight win and 11 straight matches unbeaten at Casino Arizona Field.
WHAT TO KNOW
- Solomon Asante set a USL Championship Western Conference record by scoring in his 7th consecutive match.
- The crowd of 6,372 fans marked the club’s 12th straight sellout at Casino Arizona Field.
- Amadou Dia is the first defender in club history to notch a brace.
Rising FC had at least three major chances on target in the first half, but stout goalkeeping from the Portland goalkeeper kept the match scoreless. Then just after the half-hour mark, defender Mustapha Dumbuya drew a foul in the box and the club was awarded a penalty. Asante stepped to the spot and buried his chance at the 32nd minute.
Timbers 2 owned the scoresheet after that. In the 37th minute, Christian Ojeda equalized and sent the match into the half 1-1. Then Portland wasted little time in the second half finding the back of the net thanks to Bryan Hurtado in the 49th minute.
With Phoenix Rising trailing 2-1 in the 62nd minute, Dia made a run toward the box, made a shifty move to get around his defender, then slid the ball through the goalkeeper’s arms to equalize the match.
Nearing the end of stoppage time, Asante curled a cross toward the far left post and found Dia, who out-leaped his defender and headed the ball into the corner and just past the diving keeper.
Rising FC earned a second penalty two minutes later and Asante buried his kick to make it 4-2.
Phoenix Rising will be off for the July 4th weekend and return to USL Championship action on Saturday, July 13, when they travel to Rio Grande Valley. That match is scheduled to kickoff at 5:30 p.m.
