(August 5, 2018) — Phoenix Rising FC got back into the win column in emphatic fashion with a dominating 4-1 win on the road over Portland Timbers 2. Forward Chris Cortez scored his tenth and 11th goals of the season in addition to an assist in a standout performance. The two goals put Cortez third in the league in goals scored.
Cortez, the club’s leading scorer, wasted little time notching the first goal of the match. In the eighth minute, midfielder Alessandro Riggi curled a corner kick into the box. Cortez outlept everyone in the box to head the ball past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
Midfielder Collin Fernandez doubled the lead in the 63rd minute. Following a nice spell of play between Solomon Asante and Devin Vega, Vega sent a cross into the box that deflected back into empty space in the box, Fernandez came rushing onto the ball and fired it into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Following a Portland goal from Marco Farfan in the 72nd minute after Rising goalkeeper Carl Wosczynski made the initial save on a T2 penalty kick, Cortez scored his second goal of the evening 10 minutes later. Teammate Solomon Asante slipped a passed between the central defense to break Cortez free for a one-on-one chance against the Portland goalkeeper. He calmly finished to make it 3-1.
Cortez returned the favor in the 89th minute. While rushing down the right flank, Cortez sent a cross into the middle of the box for Asante. The midfielder jump kicked the ball into the net to complete the day’s scoring. Rising goalkeeper Woszczynski would put the bow on the Rising win making his second penalty kick save of the match deep into extra time and seconds before the final whistle blew.
