PHOENIX, Arizona (Tuesday, December 1) – Phoenix Rising FC has signed defender Oluwatobilba (Tobi) Adewole, pending USL and federation approval, the club announced today.
“I’m blessed to have an opportunity to play for such a powerhouse club,” said Adewole. “I’ve been in the East my whole USL career, so I’m excited for the challenges the Western Conference will bring. I am looking forward to meeting my new teammates, the staff and fans. I cannot wait to get started.”
The 6-2 center back signed with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and made his professional debut on July 4, 2017. From 2017 to 2019, Adewole appeared 74 times for Pittsburgh, scoring three goals. Adewole appeared in 12 matches for St. Louis FC in 2020, helping the team to an appearance in the Eastern Conference Semifinal.
“We are very excited to have Tobi join our team,” said Phoenix Rising head coach Rick Schantz. “His size and athleticism compliments our team well. He is strong in the air and a very good defender with experience at this level. He will help us in our quest for trophies.”
Adewole, 25, was born in Maryland and majored in economics at nearby George Washington University. He earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team honors in his first season with the Colonials and amassed 64 appearances (5 goals) from 2013 to 2016. The defender led a back line that finished with league-best 0.62 GAA his senior year and set a program record with nine clean sheets.
