(PHOENIX, AZ) February 24, 2017 – Today, Phoenix Rising Football Club announced it signed renowned Manchester City, Chelsea, and English international player Shaun Wright-Phillips for the 2017 season pending United Soccer League (USL) and United States Soccer Federation (USSF) approval. Per club policy, the terms of the deal are not public.
“We’re thrilled to have a player of Shaun’s quality and experience joining us,” said Phoenix Rising FC head coach Frank Yallop. “This is another step toward making us one of the most competitive clubs in USL.”
Wright-Phillips made his professional debut with English side Manchester City in 1999. During his six seasons, Wright-Phillips appeared in 181 matches for Manchester City and scored 31 goals.
The midfielder spent time with Chelsea from 2005-09, appearing in 125 matches and scoring ten goals over four seasons with the club. As a member of the team, he also won the 2005 FA Community Shield, 2005-06 English Premier League Championship, and the 2006-07 FA Cup and League Cup.
He returned to Manchester City in 2008 and made 94 appearances with the team and scored 16 more goals over four seasons. From 2011-2015, Wright-Phillips appeared in 74 matches over four seasons with Queens Park Rangers. He’s spent the last two seasons with Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls.
Wright-Phillips earned 36 caps with the English National Team, scoring six international goals. He was also a member of the 2010 World Cup team that competed in South Africa.
