Phoenix, Arizona (Wednesday, September 20) – Phoenix Rising FC (12-8-10) conceded a late goal to draw 1-1 with Indy Eleven tonight at 38th St/Washington.
The goal ended Rising’s season-high shutout streak at 366 minutes, but the team still managed to remain unbeaten in six consecutive matches thanks to Carlos Harvey’s sixth goal of the season. Phoenix now travels to El Paso to face Locomotive FC this Saturday, September 23. That match is set to kick off live on AZFSEN and ESPN+ at 6:30 p.m.
Rising returns to 38th St/Washington Saturday, Sept. 30 (7:30 p.m.). Tickets for that match are available here or by calling 623-594-9606.
Tonight, Rising conceded possession at a rate of 60-40 to Indy Eleven through the opening 20 minutes of the match. The tactical seesaw swayed back and forth as both teams searched for the opening goal, but neither could trouble the opposing goalkeeper until Danny Trejo ‘megged a defender with a pass into the feet of Carlos Harvey in the 29th minute. Harvey received the pass with his back to goal at the top of the box and pushed a pass into the path of Henry Uzochukwu. “Uzo” struck the ball with his first touch but his contested shot limped slowly to Indy goalkeeper Tim Trilk, who made an easy save.
Indy fired back with a trio of chances. The second came from former Rising star Solomon Asante in the 36th minute. The two-time league MVP brought down a cross on the right flank, danced by a defender and fired a quick shot high towards the near post. Fortunately for Rising, goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo had seen it before and jumped to make a comfortable save with both hands.
Seconds later, Indy rang a shot off the crossbar, but fortunately for the home side, the woodwork weathered the storm and Phoenix’s shutout streak continued past the 321-minute mark at halftime.
Rising came out of the break on the front foot, earning a corner and forcing a save out of Trilk within the first three minutes of the half. Phoenix continued to pin back Indy, leveling the possession battle in the match to 50-50 by the 72nd minute, but still, neither team could break through.
Until the 80th minute.
Following 35 minutes of relentless pressure, Trejo received a pass on the left flank, went by his defender and drilled a cross into the six-yard box. Harvey outran his marker and dove to get his head on the pass, sending it into the top of the net to give Phoenix a 1-0 lead.
Rising looked to have the match in control over the final 10 minutes, but conceded a corner late in stoppage-time. Indy’s Cam Lindley sent in a driven ball to the center of the area, where Adrian Diz Pe rose above the pack to head home the equalizer.
