PHOENIX, Arizona (Saturday, July 22) – Phoenix Rising FC (6-5-8) came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Colorado Switchbacks FC tonight at 38th St/Washington.
Danny Trejo scored in the 90th minute for the home side, which is now unbeaten in its last four home matches. The team travels to Sacramento on Wednesday (8 p.m. on KPHE/ESPN+) and Monterey Bay on Saturday (7 p.m. on KPHE/ESPN+). Tonight, neither team could trouble the opposing goalkeeper until the 25th minute when Phoenix’s Eddie Munjoma broke into the box on the dribble. Munjoma cut through a pair of defenders before trying to pick out the low corner of the net but a sliding tackle from Switchbacks defender Drew Skundrich sent the attempt out for Rising’s second corner of the half.
Rising gave the ball away in a bad spot in the 42nd minute. Juan Tejada picked up the loose ball for Colorado and cut towards the center of the pitch, around two defenders and got off a curling shot that tucked just inside the far post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
Phoenix earned a corner kick near the 73rd minute of the match. Substitute Fede Varela whipped in the cross, directly to fellow substitute Carlos Harvey in the center of the six-yard box. Harvey got plenty of power on his header but had it saved off the line by a Switchbacks defender to keep the scoreline, 1-0.
Varela sent in another dangerous cross to the back post on a corner in the 90th minute. Manuel Arteaga outjumped his marker at the back post to win the initial header, pushing the ball across the top of the six-yard box. Trejo was there to finish off the chance, driving a snap header past Colorado goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky to make it a 1-1 final.
