PHOENIX (February 20, 2019) — Phoenix Rising took down the defending MLS Western Conference Champion Portland Timbers 1-0 for the club’s first preseason win of 2019. Forward Adam Jahn scored the match’s lone goal, his second of the preseason.
The goal began when goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski found Junior Flemmings with a long right-to-left diagonal toward the left sideline. With space, Flemmings scooped a pass over his defender toward Jahn, who chested the ball down to his feet.
With defenders in front and behind him, Jahn moved to his left, then cut hard to the right to shed the defenders and give him room to curl a shot around the keeper and into the far right side of the net.
Woszczynski earned his first clean sheet of the preseason (the team’s second) and made two major saves in the first half to keep the match scoreless. In the 19th minute, a Portland attacker got free and alone in the box. But Woszczynski fell to the ground and made a kick save to deny the chance.
Ten minutes later, the Timbers had another chance on target when Dairon Asprilla took a hard, curling shot from the top of the box. But Woszczynski was there to knock it down and cover it up.
Rising finishes its Mobile Mini Sun Cup schedule this Saturday against USL Championship side OKC Energy FC. The match kicks off at 2 pm from the Kino Sports Complex North Stadium.
