ORO VALLEY, Ariz. — Phoenix Rising FC squared off against the defending MLS Supporters Shield winners in a unique, open-to-the-public match played at the public Naranja Park in Oro Valley, Ariz., falling to New York Red Bulls, 5-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Rising’s lone goal was a highlight-reel stunner from trialist Ben Spencer. With the club down three goals, defender Doueugui Mala sent a long ball toward Spencer, who was between defenders. After bringing the ball down with a touch, Spencer cut to his left to cause the Red Bulls defender to slip and fall. With the extra space and time, Spencer curled a shot inside the far left post for the goal.
New York was powered behind a hat trick from Bradley Wright-Phillips and additional goals from Kaku and Alex Muyl.
The loss ends a tough three-match stretch in 10 days for Rising FC. The club gets a break before it’s back on the pitch this Saturday against MLS side Real Salt Lake at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at www.phxrisingfc.com
