(September 22, 2018) — Phoenix Rising set club records for most wins in a season (18) and points in a season (59) following its 2-1 win on the road over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.
The win also draws Rising FC within one point of first-place Orange County Soccer club in the Western Conference standings. Phoenix Rising has played one less match than Orange County.
Defender Joey Farrell got the scoring started for Phoenix Rising in the 22nd minute. Farrell headed a corner kick from Solomon Asante into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season (and second against Colorado Springs) and a 1-0 lead.
Then midfielder Kevon Lambert doubled the lead in the 43rd minute. Goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski sent a booming goal kick into the Colorado Springs’ defensive third. Forward Chris Cortez out-dueled his defender to head the ball on to a wide open Lambert. With the defense asleep, Lambert ran straight into the box and then beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to make it 2-0.
Colorado Springs’ Saeed Robinson pulled the home side within one with a goal in the the 66th minute and it seemed momentarily that Switchbacks FC would ride that momentum to an equalizer.
In the 69th minute, Colorado Springs’ Jordan Burt headed a ball past Woszczynski but the ball bounced off the post and into the middle of the six-yard box. Burt’s teammate Shane Malcolm was there to shoot the rebound into the back of the net but Woszczynski rushed back into position to make the save and keep it 2-1.
Phoenix Rising ends its three-match road trip with a 2-1-0 record. The club returns home this Saturday, September 29, for a matchup with Saint Louis FC. The match will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and the first 2,500 fans who arrive will receive a Phoenix Rising rally towel courtesy of the Mayo Clinic. Tickets can be purchased at www.phxrisingfc.com
