PHOENIX (May 15, 2018) — Phoenix Rising teammates Didier Drogba and Alessandro Riggi were both named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 9 of the 2018 USL season. Drogba scored a brace, which included a world-renowned 40-yard free kick goal, in Rising FC’s 5-1 win over Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Saturday. Riggi recorded a pair of assists and completed five key passes in Phoenix’s 3-0 win over OKC Energy FC on Wednesday.
This is the first time either player has been named to the USL Team of the Week and marks the third time Drogba has been recognized by the league (he was a Team of the Week Honorable Mention twice). This is also the first time in 2018 that two Phoenix Rising players were named to the Team of the Week in the same week and it’s the eighth week out of nine that a player has been recognized by the league.
Phoenix Rising FC’s next match is a short road trip to Chandler-Gilbert Community College for the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. The club will kickoff against Sporting AZ FC at 7:30 p.m. Fans can attend one of two official pre-match parties being held in the area. Fans can either head to Puro Cigar Bar (111 W. Boston St. | Chandler) or The Brass Tap (5771, 313 N Gilbert Rd. | Gilbert) to take advantage of happy hour food and drink specials prior to the match.
The club’s next league match is against Sacramento Republic FC this Saturday at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. and the first 2,500 fans who enter will receive a Car Shade courtesy of Foothills Sports Medicine Physical Therapy and a free bottle of “Drogba’s Magic Water” courtesy of Coca-Cola and Dasani Water.
