
PHOENIX (May 16, 2017) – Phoenix Rising FC takes a break from United Soccer League (USL) play to travel to Fresno, California, for the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. The club kicks off its U.S. Open Cup campaign against Premier Development League (PDL) side Fresno Fuego. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. and be streamed live online.
This is the fourth season Phoenix Rising FC has participated in the U.S. Open Cup. In its previous three appearances as Arizona United SC, the club has gone 3-3-0 in Open Cup play. Its deepest run came in 2014 when the club reached the fourth round of the tournament before losing to Major League Soccer (MLS) side LA Galaxy. Last season the club defeated PDL side FC Tucson, 5-0, in the second round before falling to USL side Colorado Spring Switchbacks FC, 3-0, in round three.
Feugo comes into the match in good form. In addition to their 4-1 thrashing of La Maquina FC in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup, Fresno is 2-0-0 in PDL play, outscoring their opponents 7-0. The club is led offensively by former Arizona United SC midfielder Jose ‘Chiva’ Cuevas, who scored a brace in the club’s first U.S Open Cup match.
The Fuego have made three previous appearances in the U.S. Open Cup, going as far as the fourth round in 2003. In six matches, the club is 3-3-0 in the tournament.
