On the pitch, Rising FC lost their most recent match, falling 3-2 on the road to OKC Energy last Tuesday. Meanwhile, Whitecaps 2 enter Saturday’s game on a high note, having won two of their last three matches, including a 1-0 victory over rival Portland Timbers 2 in their most recent match last Saturday. A 56th-minute goal from midfielder Marco Bustos was enough to earn Rich Fagan’s squad three points in the first of three straight road matches.
While Whitecaps FC 2 doesn’t score much — they have scored just 13 goals in 11 games — the club is 6th in the league with four clean sheets so far this season.
Last year, the teams split their two meetings in the USL, with each winning at home. Phoenix earned a dramatic 3-2 win on August 3, 2016, coming back from a 2-0 second-half deficit thanks to two Luke Rooney goals, before Chris Cortez fired home the winner in stoppage time.
Overall, the clubs are 2-2-0 against one another, with the home team winning every match in the series.
