PHOENIX (June 16, 2018) – In front of a sellout crowd of 6,273 fans, Phoenix Rising FC defeated Tulsa Roughnecks FC 3-0, giving head coach Rick Schantz his second win in as many matches.
Forwards Chris Cortez, Jason Johnson and Kevaughn Frater all scored in the victory while goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski collected his third consecutive clean sheet.
Cortez opened the scoring in the 39th minute, one-touching a pass from midfielder Solomon Asante into the net from close range. Three minutes later, Johnson doubled the Rising FC lead in spectacular fashion.
The move started with Asante, who found defender Amadou Dia in space down the left flank. Dia sent a picturesque cross into the middle, allowing Johnson to jump up and smash the ball into the upper corner with scissor kick to give Rising FC a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Cortez and Johnson both scored their seventh goal of the season on Saturday, tied for most on the team.
Frater, who substituted into the game in the 80th minute, tacked on the third goal in second half stoppage time. Midfielder Alessandro Riggi flew down the right wing with speed, blowing past Tulsa Roughnecks defenders before delivering a pass into the box that found Frater, who poked home his first goal of the season.
The victory extends Rising FC’s unbeaten streak to four matches and scoreless streak to three straight games. With 31 points, the club sits in second place in the USL’s Western Conference. It’s plus-18 goal difference is best in the league.
Phoenix Rising FC will return to action on Saturday, June 23, when it will look to extend both streaks in a road match at Rio Grande Valley FC Toros at H-E-B Park. The match will kick off at 5:30 pm.
