Phoenix Rising FC (13-6-5) is back up to third place in the Western Conference playoff race after knocking off Las Vegas Lights FC, 2-0, on the road last Saturday. With 44 points, the club is just six points back of first-place Real Monarchs SLC and has a 10-point cushion off the playoff cut line.
Phoenix Rising moved closer to a couple milestones this year after winning on Saturday. The club’s 44 points accrued this season is already the second-highest total in club history and the team still has 10 matches left to reach the high-water mark of 58 points set last season. Rising FC, which has scored 45 goals this season, is also just five goals shy of tying the club record for most goals in a season, also set last year, at 50.
In Las Vegas, midfielder Solomon Asante scored the game-winner, his 11th goal on the season and fourth in the past two games. He is now tied with forward Chris Cortez for most goals on the team. Both are tied for seventh in the USL in scoring. The club’s single-season goals record for a player is 14.
San Antonio FC comes to the desert looking to snap a two-game losing streak after suffering setbacks to Portland Timbers 2 and Seattle Sounders FC 2 its last couple times out. With 34 points, SAFC currently holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, ahead of ninth-place Swope Park Rangers on goal difference.
Wednesday will be the first meeting between the two clubs this year and sixth all-time. San Antonio leads the all-time series 3-1-1 and hasn’t lost to PRFC since the club’s first-ever meeting in 2016.
