PHOENIX – (September 5, 2018) — It took an hour before Phoenix Rising FC got its first shot on target, but captain Solomon Asante made it count and notched the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Rio Grande Valley FC. Phoenix Rising now has 53 points on the year, tied with Real Monarchs atop the Western Conference Standings.
The club also completed its fourth straight clean sheet of the season, the second time this year the club has reached that mark.
Asante’s goal came in the 61st minute. Forward Billy Forbes brought the ball down the left sideline and then sent a cross toward the box. After he barely missed Kevaughn Frater streaking into the penalty area, an RGVFC player whiffed on his clearance attempt in the box. Asante pounced on the loose ball and fired it into the top of the net for the game-winner.
Phoenix Rising had goalie Carl Woszczynski to thank for the match still being scoreless at that point. In the 44th minute, Woszczynski was forced to dive to his left to stop a long-distance low-curling drive toward the far right of the net.
Then in stoppage time, it was Woszczynski again, this time staring down a long-distance rocket toward the net before punching the ball high and into the air and behind the net.
Phoenix Rising will have little time to prepare for its next match. The club travels to San Antonio for a date with San Antonio FC on Saturday, September 8. The match kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Fans can watch the match at the club’s official watch party at the Tempe Venezia’s Pizza.
