PHOENIX (May 27, 2017) — Phoenix Rising FC forward Jason Johnson contributed to both goals in the club’s 2-1 win over LA Galaxy II in Carson, CA. It’s the first league road win of the season for the club.
Rising FC fell behind early in the match. In the 13th minute, LA’s Ariel Lassiter rushed in behind the defense as his teammate, Ethan Zubak, slipped a pass from the endline and through the defense. Lassiter got to the ball and fired a shot to beat the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. It was Lassiter’s fourth career goal against Phoenix Rising.
Phoenix Rising FC would equalize in the 31st minute. Midfielder Shaun Wright-Phillips gained possession of a loose ball near the top of the box, then pulled back to shake off the defense and sent a pass wide to midfielder Eric Avila. Avila took a touch, then slid a pass to Johnson on the left side of the pitch before he rushed into the box. After a quick touch, Johnson sent the ball toward the net where Avila was there to finish the goal.
In the 61st minute, it was Avila and Johnson again contributing to a goal. This time Avila drew a foul in the box to give Phoenix Rising a penalty kick. Johnson stepped up to the spot and beat the goalkeeper to the left side to make it 2-1
