Phoenix Rising Advances To Western Conference Semifinals Following Thrilling Penalty Shootout Win

By Phoenix Rising Communications, 10/27/19, 12:00AM MST

PHOENIX (October 26th, 2019) — Phoenix Rising FC advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals following an 8-7 penalty shootout win over Austin Bold FC in front of a sold out crowd of 6,642 fans at Casino Arizona Field. Rising remains unbeaten at home in the playoffs with an official record of 2-0-1.

  • Phoenix Rising won its first-ever penalty shootout. The club had been eliminated from the 2017 USL Playoffs and from the 2018 and 2019 U.S. Open Cup in penalties.
  • Zac Lubin notched his 14th clean sheet of the season.
  • Phoenix Rising sold out its 21st consecutive match at Casino Arizona Field.

Phoenix Rising goalkeeper Zac Lubin had a standout performance, making five saves in regulation in addition to his two saves during the penalty kick shootout. His first real test of the match came just before the end of the half. With the Rising defense confused about a non-offside call, Austin’s Ema Twumasi got in on Lubin for a wide-open on-on-one chance. But the keeper dove for the ball at the attacker’s feet and smothered it before a shot could be taken.
Lubin stood tall again in the 95th minute. Twumasi charged in toward the net from the left side and let loose a quick shot toward the near left post. But Lubin punched it away from the goal to stop the last dangerous chance for Austin and keep the match scoreless.
Rising had opportunities of its own, peppering Austin goalkeeper Diego Restrepo with shots but the team couldn’t find the back of the net. The best chance for a goal came in the 107th minute. Midfielder Jon Bakero sent in a free kick from outside the left side of the box and found the head of Kevon Lambert. But Lambert’s momentum and shot took him right into the goalkeeper Restrepo, who made the save.
In the penalty shooutout, Phoenix Rising converted eight of their nine penalty shots. Defender A.J. Cochran, who took and missed the final shot in the club’s U.S. Open Cup elimination, found the back of the net on his turn to send the team into the next round of the playoffs. Lubin denied Austin’s Thomas de Villardi and Jermain Taylor.
Phoenix Rising will return to Casino Arizona Field on Friday, November 1, to square up with Real Monarchs SLC in the Western Conference Semifinals. It will also be a $1 Beer Night For fans. Tickets for the match will go on sale at 9 am on Sunday, October 27th. Fans can purchase tickets at
