PHOENIX (November 17, 2016) — Phoenix Rising Football Club today announced it has re-signed midfielder Luke Rooney. The contract is pending league and USSF approval and, per league rules, the terms of the contact will not be public.
“Luke had an outstanding second half of the season for us,” said Phoenix Rising FC head coach Frank Yallop. “It shows that we’re trying to build a good team that wins games and will challenge for the championship. And re-signing Luke is a big step towards that.”
Rooney appeared in 24 matches (1,972 minutes) and finished 2016 tied for the second-most goals on the team (eight) and had the second-most assists on the team (five). His 26 points is the third-highest regular season tally in the club’s history. The England-native scored numerous highlight-worthy goals, including an off-foot volley against LA Galaxy II on August 31, that was good enough to win USL goal of the week and be featured nationally by Fox Sports. Rooney was also named Arizona United SC’s MVP by the club’s supporters.
